Welcome to the Grammar Bee game. This brain game tests your ability to recognize nouns, verbs, adverbs, and adjectives. It's like a spelling bee, except for grammar.
To begin, click the Medium or Large link under the picture of the game at left. This opens the game in a pop-up window.
Fly your bee around the word grid, and help him capture the right words quickly. The game reminds me a lot of Pacman.
Instead of dots, you capture words. Instead of ghosts, there are enemy beetles!
The word grid changes each time you play. So play this game over and over for a new challenge each time.
HOW TO PLAY. Use the arrow keys to fly your bee around the word grid. Your goal is to find and highlight all the words in the grid that match the part of speech in the title of the level.
For example, suppose a level is titled Adverbs. The number of adverbs you need to find is displayed in the upper right corner of the game screen.
Each word in the Grammar Bee grid is enclosed inside a rectangular box. To highlight a word matching the level title, fly your bee around all four sides of the rectangle around that word.
On the Adverbs level you might see the word "quickly" in the grid. Recognizing this is an adverb, you would fly your bee around the four sides of that word to capture it.
There are 12 levels to complete. Later levels are more difficult because the enemy bugs are faster. You get 5 bees per game.
ENEMY BUGS. But stay away from the other bugs in the grid. They are trying to eat your bee.
The good news is you are faster than the other bugs. The bad news is they are pretty smart and will cut you off if you're not careful.
Grammar Bee is a lot like Pacman that way. As in Pacman, where the ghosts chase you intelligently through the maze, in this game the other bugs (which look mostly like beetles) attempt to catch up with you.
Fortunately, you have the advantage of being able to change directions. The other bugs can only move forward, but using the arrow keys you can turn around and fly the other way.
One good strategy is to periodically stop and let the other bugs get a bit closer to you. Sometimes they'll group up, and then you can circle away from them.
Your score displays between each level. For a high score, finish the levels as fast as possible to earn time bonuses. If you need to pause the game, press the ESC key.
Grammar Bee trains important brain skills like memory, visual perception, and reaction time. Enjoy!
