What Is a Nonogram?

A nonogram, also called a picross, griddler, pic-a-pix, or hanjie, is a picture logic puzzle. You're given a grid with numbers along the top of each column and the left of each row. Those numbers tell you how the filled squares in that line are arranged. Fill the squares correctly across the whole grid and a picture emerges, pixel by pixel.

The clue numbers describe runs of consecutive filled squares. A clue of "5" on a row means five filled squares in an unbroken block. A clue of "3 1" means a block of three, then at least one empty square, then a single filled square, in that order. The order of the numbers matches the order of the blocks in the line, which is the key to cracking the whole thing by logic alone.

How to Play Nonogram Daily

The game includes a built-in tutorial that walks through the solving techniques step by step, but here are the essentials to get you started.

Complete rows and columns from the clues. Start with the largest clue numbers. A clue that's close to the full length of a line leaves very few possible positions, sometimes only one. Those are your anchor points.

Fill dark squares, mark empty ones. The game gives you two marks: a dark square for cells you've determined are filled, and an X (or a placeholder color) for cells you've determined are empty. Marking the empty cells is just as important as filling the dark ones. It narrows down where the remaining blocks can go.

Use overlaps. When a block is long enough that its possible positions overlap, the squares in the overlap zone must be filled no matter where the block ultimately sits. This is the single most useful technique in the game. On a row of six with a clue of "5," for example, the middle four squares are always filled regardless of which end the block starts from.

Work back and forth. Solving a nonogram means bouncing between rows and columns. Filling in a few squares on a row gives you new information about the columns those squares belong to, which in turn unlocks more rows. Keep cycling until the picture is complete.

When unsure, use a placeholder. If you're fairly confident a cell is empty but not certain, the game lets you use the other color as a temporary placeholder and swap it out at the end. It's a useful way to test an idea without committing.

Why a Daily Puzzle Habit Works

The "daily" structure is more than a gimmick. There's a real benefit to doing one focused logic puzzle a day rather than binging a dozen once a month.

A single daily puzzle is a manageable commitment. It's short enough that you'll actually do it, but demanding enough to give your brain a genuine workout. That combination, low friction plus real challenge, is exactly what makes a habit stick. And a consistent daily habit of focused mental effort is far more valuable than occasional marathon sessions, in the same way that a short daily walk beats one long hike a month for physical fitness.

The fresh-every-day format also removes decision fatigue. You don't have to choose which puzzle to play or what difficulty to set. You just open the day's challenge and start solving. That simplicity makes it easy to return, which is the whole point.

What Nonograms Do for Your Brain

Nonograms are one of the purest logic puzzles you can play, and they exercise several cognitive skills at once.

Deductive reasoning. Every square you fill is the result of a logical inference from the clues. Unlike puzzles that reward guessing, a well-made nonogram can be solved entirely through deduction. That makes it excellent practice for the kind of step-by-step reasoning that underlies problem-solving in general.

Working memory. To make progress, you hold multiple constraints in mind at once: what a row's clue requires, what the intersecting columns allow, and how those interact. Juggling those overlapping constraints is a direct workout for working memory.

Spatial reasoning. Nonograms are inherently visual. You're constantly translating abstract number clues into spatial arrangements of filled and empty cells, then seeing how those arrangements fit together into a coherent picture. That number-to-space translation is a distinct cognitive skill that not many puzzles train as directly.

Sustained concentration. A nonogram doesn't reward frantic activity. It rewards patient, methodical attention. Working through one is a short session of exactly the kind of sustained focus that's increasingly rare, and increasingly valuable, in a distraction-heavy world.
