Here's a Checkers game online you can play for free. Play against the computer! The graphics in this game are clean and simple.

To begin, click the Small, Medium, or Large link or Very Large button or HTML5/Mobile link under the picture at left. This opens the game in a pop-up window.

The HTML5/Mobile version works on desktop computers and tablets. It is a similar game made by a different game developer.

Checkers Game Online - Instructions

If you like this game, you might enjoy the other free online checkers games on this site, such as Big Shot Checkers and Alice in Wonderland Checkers.

HOW TO PLAY. This game follows the standard rules for checkers. Red goes first.

To move a checker, drag it with your mouse. Checker pieces can only be moved on the diagonal squares of the checker board.

Your goal is to capture your opponent's pieces to the point where your opponent can no longer make any moves. To capture a piece, jump over it. Double and triple jumps are allowed.

Regular pieces can only move forward. Once a piece reaches the opponent's home row, it becomes a King, a powerful piece. A King piece, which has a crown symbol on it, must still be moved diagonally, but it can go forward or backward on the board.

One of the best features of this checkers game online is the configurable options.

Before starting a new game, click the Options button above the game if you want to change any of the default game options.

In the Options menu, you can customize your checkers game as follows:

  • Opponent - Computer/Human. Choose whether to play against the computer, or play against another person in the room. For example, if your friend is in the room with you, you can play checkers against him or her.

  • Force Turn - Yes/No. This option is for setting whether players are forced to take available jumps. It's up to you whether you want to switch this to No.

  • Sound FX - On/Off. Use this option to turn off the checkers sound effects.

  • Difficulty - Easy/Medium/Hard. When playing checkers online against the computer, you can change the difficulty to whichever you choose.

  • Start Over. If you get into the middle of a checker game but want to quit and start over, choose this option.

As you capture pieces and your opponent does the same, the captured checkers pieces are shown on the left and right side of the board.

The graphics in this checkers game online aren't the fanciest I've seen, but this game has some of the best options. It's especially neat that you can play against a real human opponent, or change the level of difficulty against the computer opponent.

Board games like checkers train important brain skills such as concentration, visual perception, and strategic thinking. Play this game often to give your brain a boost.

GAME TIP #1: Many games on this site such as Curveball were built with Adobe Flash. To play these games, you must allow the free Adobe Flash Player to run in your browser. If you don't see an animation in the red rectangle above, click in the red rectangle and activate your Flash Player. Then the Flash-based games should open for you.

If you see a message that the Adobe Flash Player is "blocked", go to your browser's Settings page and change Block to Ask First, if possible.

If the red rectangle is empty, your browser might not have the Flash Player. To check this, follow the steps on Adobe's Flash Player Help page.

GAME TIP #2: If you cannot get the Flash-based brain games to work, try the HTML5 brain games instead. HTML5 games do not use the Adobe Flash Player. They work in modern browsers automatically. All the HTML5 games are listed on this page.
