The game is called Canasta Royale Offline. Despite "Offline" being part of the game's title, this version plays online in your browser with no download required.

This game is part of the free online brain games collection and the free card and tile games section on this site.

How to Play Canasta Online

Canasta belongs to the rummy family of card games, but instead of building runs, the main idea is to collect and meld cards of the same rank. A "canasta" is a meld containing at least seven cards of one rank.

Reach 5,000 points. A full game is played over a series of hands. The first side to reach 5,000 or more points wins. Your running total and the computer's total are displayed on the game screen.

Build melds. Gather cards with the same rank, such as several Kings or several 7s, and place them together as a meld. The game shows the minimum number of points your opening meld must be worth before you can put cards on the table.

Make a canasta. Extend one of your melds until it contains at least seven cards. A natural canasta uses no wild cards. A mixed canasta includes wild cards.

Use wild cards carefully. Twos and Jokers are wild cards in this version of Canasta. They can help complete a meld, but a natural canasta is worth more than a mixed canasta.

Watch the discard pile. Your choices affect what the computer may be able to pick up next. Canasta rewards paying attention not only to your own hand, but also to which ranks your opponent appears to be collecting.

In the standard one-on-one mode, each player receives 15 cards. The game also includes a Team Mode, where the deal changes to 11 cards per player.

Canasta Scoring

Scoring is one of the things that gives Canasta its strategy. Cards you successfully meld add to your score, while cards left in your hand at the end of a hand count against you.

Card values. Black 3s and cards from 4 through 7 are worth 5 points each. Cards from 8 through King are worth 10 points each. Aces and 2s are worth 20 points each, and Jokers are worth 50 points each.

Red 3s. Red 3s are special bonus cards worth 100 points each. If you collect all four red 3s, each is worth 200 points.

Canasta bonuses. A mixed canasta is worth a 300-point bonus. A natural canasta, made without wild cards, earns a 500-point bonus.

Because unmelded cards remaining in your hand count negatively, a high-value card can be either useful or dangerous. Holding a Joker may help you complete a valuable meld, for example, but an unused Joker left in your hand costs 50 points.

Canasta Strategy and Tips

Build with natural cards first when you can. Wild cards are flexible, so there is often an advantage to saving them until you know which meld needs help. Keeping a meld natural also preserves your chance at the larger natural-canasta bonus.

Pay attention to what your opponent takes. If the computer repeatedly picks up or keeps cards of a particular rank, think twice before discarding another card of that rank.

Manage high-point cards. Aces, 2s, and Jokers can contribute a lot to a meld, but they also hurt more if they are still in your hand when the hand ends.

Think beyond the current turn. The obvious move is not always the best move. Sometimes holding a card for another turn gives you a better chance to complete a natural canasta or avoid feeding the discard pile to your opponent.

Use the on-screen goal. The game displays the point requirement for your opening meld. Check that number before committing cards so you do not build a combination that falls short.

About This Canasta Game

Canasta game splash screen

This browser version includes both regular Canasta and an unlockable Team Mode. The statistics screen tracks results such as hands won and lost, high score, best hand, mixed canastas, and natural canastas.

The game also saves progress automatically during play and includes an undo feature for mistaken melds. That makes it easy to return to a longer game instead of having to finish all the way to 5,000 points in one sitting.

Canasta is a good fit for a brain-games collection because every hand makes you keep several things in mind at once: your own meld possibilities, the discard pile, your opponent's choices, the current score, and the best time to use wild cards. It is a card game built around attention, short-term tracking, and planning rather than speed alone.
