Fun Facts About Summer

A summer crossword puzzle can be solved in any season, of course. But if it happens not to be summer right now, here are a few interesting facts from Wikipedia about the hottest season to put you in the mood to solve this puzzle:

  • The summer solstice, or longest day of the year, occurs between June 20 and June 22 in the Northern Hemisphere. Each year thousands of people gather at Stonehenge in England to celebrate the summer solstice.
  • In the Southern Hemisphere, summer holidays include Christmas and New Year's Day.
  • Meteorologists divide the seasons, including summer by the exact month. From their point of view, summer occurs during the full months of June, July, and August.
  • Summer lasts from May 1 to August 1 on the Irish calendar.
  • Many public holidays around the world happen in summer. For example, Canada Day (July 1), Swiss National Day (August 1), Bastille Day (France - July 14), and Memorial Day (USA - Last Monday of May).
  • The expression "dog days of summer" goes back to the ancient Greeks. They blamed these hottest days, which fall between July 3 and August 11, on Sirius and named them after the Dog Star (Sirius) in the Canis Major constellation.
  • Summer is generally a low point for television viewing. The exception is childrens' shows, due to most children being on vacation from school during this season.

I enjoy solving crossword puzzles. It was a lot of fun coming up with the words and clues for this Summer crossword.
