Mahjongg Instructions

For brief descriptions of all the Mahjong games on this site, see my Mahjong Tile Games page.

Match tiles in pairs to remove them from the board. Tiles that are blocked by other tiles, such as from the left, right, or top, cannot be moved.

Note: The instructions below are for the Adobe Flash version of the game.

HOW TO PLAY.  When matching, first click one of the tiles which turns that tile red. Click the second tile of the pair, and both tiles will disappear from the board.

The faster you clear the board, the higher your score. You lose 10 points for every second that passes, so be quick.

HINT. Click the "Hint" button if you get stuck. When the "Hint" button is clicked, a pair of available matching tiles flashes briefly.

Do not use the Hints very often though. Each time you use a Hint, your score drops by 100 points.

HISTORY. Even though when you play Mahjongg online it is a solo game, the real Mahjongg is meant for four players.

The game itself was created in China and means "sparrow". According to one myth, Confucius, the great Chinese philosopher, invented it circa 500 B.C.

Some people believe this, since the dragon tiles in Mahjongg (cardinal tiles) do match the cardinal virtues preached by Confucius, which are benevolence, sincerity, and piety. It is unlikely that Confucius was the true inventor, though. No evidence of the game has been found before the 19th century.
