Online Typing Game - Instructions

NOTE: The instructions below are for the old Adobe Flash version of the game.

This free "Type for Gold" online typing game provides typing practice in a way that's both effective and not boring. In the game, your character is a track runner competing for a medal.

Type quickly and accurately, and he will run faster. But if you make typos or type too slowly, the other runners will pass him up and win instead.

Besides typing ability, games like Type for Gold train important brain skills including concentration and visual acuity.

HOW TO PLAY. Type for Gold turns the drudge of practicing your typing skills into a fun and engaging online game. The better you type, the higher your score.

After the game loads in the pop-up window, click the Play button on the main menu screen. This displays a brief set of game instructions.

Click the CONTINUE button on that screen to access the track selection screen. Click Round 1 of any of the races to begin typing and running.

Your character is a runner in Olympic track races. How fast he runs in each race depends on how well you type the words displayed at the top of the screen.

There are 20 track races in the game, based on distance to run and difficulty of words to type. The races are divided into 5 distances: 100 meter, 200 meter, 400 meter, 800 meter, and 1500 meter races.

In addition, each distance level has 4 rounds in which you can compete. These include Round 1, Round 2, the Semi Finals, and the Finals.

Round 1 of each level is automatically unlocked. To progress to the next race, you have to win the current level.

For example, to race in Round 2 of the 400m races, you need to win a Round 1 400m race. To compete in the Finals for 1500 meters, you need to win the Semi Finals in 1500 meters.

The words in the 100m race are 3- or 4-letters in length. An example might be the word "SWIM". As you type your way up the race levels, the words get longer and more difficult.

By the 1500m races, the words are 8-letters long. An example might be "BARBADOS". I've noticed there are a lot of geographic names in the word database of this online typing game.

Having selectable difficulty levels is a great feature of this online typing game. If level 1 (100m) seems too easy, jump up to a higher level of difficulty if you wish.

Practice Your Typing Skills

To begin racing, click the Play button under any of the unlocked rounds (only Round 1 at first). The starting line appears. Your character is weaning a yellow track outfit. You'll also notice 7 other competitors.

The message "On your Marks, Get Set, Go" displays on the screen, and a random word appears in a blue rectangle at the top of the screen.

This is the word you need to type. A new word appears as soon as you either correctly or incorrectly type the current word.

If you want to place well in the race, it is very important to type accurately. It seems to me that accuracy is more important that speed in this online typing game.

Each time I've made a typo, my runner slows dramatically. Two or three typos usually means not winning the race.

So type carefully. Slow your typing speed if you need to increase accuracy.

You'll progress to the next race if you win first, second, or third place in a race. Don't give up if there are one or two runners ahead of you as you near the finish line. Just concentrate as hard as you can, and type the remaining words accurately.

If you do lose a race, don't worry. You can repeat any race as often as you like. A Play Again button displays at the end of the races you lose, so you can try again.

If you decide you are competing at a level that's too difficult, simply wait until the end of the race. Then click the Main Menu button, and choose a shorter (easier) race.

You can earn Combo points by typing two or more words correctly in a row. Your combo multiplier for the race displays in the upper right corner.

A handy feature is the "Distance Left" countdown in the upper right. Glance at this periodically to determine how many meters remain in your race. This could be important if you start to feel fatigue when typing word after word.

After you've won a series of typing races, you can reset the track scores and finish times if you wish. To do this, go to the track selection screen and click the Clear Scores button.

If you want to continue improving your typing skills, you can play this typing game over and over.

Each time you race at a particular level, the words presented are scrambled. So you should see different words in a different order each time.

I really enjoy typing games. With all the time most of us spend on the computer, who couldn't benefit from being a faster and more accurate typist?

Plus, typing games like this Type for Gold online typing game can strengthen related brain skills at the same time.
