Motivate husband with Alzheimers

by Val
(USA)

My husband has been diagnosed with mild Alzheimer's Disease. We are looking to improve his short term memory, getting oxygen therapy, and working with a memory coach.

How do I motivate him to make an effort to improve his short-term memory to stop progression of disease? To learn to associate?

We have him on a number of supplements also.

Thank you, Val

Doug's Reply: In my opinion, the best way to motivate someone is to show them that their efforts can make a difference. So I would start small, and encourage his success.

For example, if he is having trouble remembering people's names, help him create the memory associations (mental images) for a few of the people whose names he is forgetting. Help him practice, but don't put too much pressure on him.

I think the first time that a memory technique helps him remember something, he will see the power and usefulness of the techniques. A little bit of success with the techniques should be very motivational.

Best regards,
Douglas

Check food allergies. Check environmental toxins. Also, as a nurse in long term care, I long suspected exposure to war gas as a reason for alzheimers disease in many of my residents. Fish oil, huperzine A,etc. are some of the supplements I've heard talked about for AD. Namenda, a pharmaceutical, seems to have a low side effect profile.
