Memorize items in a room

Brilliant site! I was wondering, How do you memorise things quickly? (eg) You open up a door in a room and in a few seconds you have memorised 10 items in detail.
Doug's Reply: You can use a combination of memory techniques and brain training to memorize things quickly as in your example.
For instance, with the Peg memory technique (http://www.memory-improvement-tips.com/remembering-lists.html) , you memorize ten "peg word images" ahead of time that you re-use over and over. One-Gun, Two-Shoe, Three-Tree, etc. You use these mental images to "peg" what you see in the room to the images you've already memorized.
Training your brain helps as well. For example, the Lumosity brain training service that I use has a brain game called Top Chimp that trains "quick" memory. In that game, a series of numbers are shown briefly on the screen that you must memorize instantly.
As with any skill, improving your memory takes practice.
