Lost in Migration, A Game to Improve Attention Span

Lost in Migration: Improve Attention Span
Play:  Small | Medium | Large
Lost in Migration is a brain game designed to improve attention span. This is the demo version of the real game created by the scientists at Lumosity (see my review).

To begin playing, click the Medium or Large link under the picture at left. This opens the game in a pop-up window.

Wait for the game to load, then click the Play button. (For game instructions, click the How to Play button.)

Flocks of birds appear in sequence. Quickly press the Arrow Key corresponding to the direction faced by the bird at the center of each flock.

Lost in Migration Instructions

HOW TO PLAY. The rules for Lost in Migration are simple. Flocks (groups) of five birds appear one at a time on the screen. As each flock appears, press the Arrow Key that matches the direction that the bird in the center of the flock is facing.

Sometimes the bird in the center will point the same direction as the other birds in the flock. But more often than not, it points in a different direction.

You need to concentrate carefully before pressing the arrow key. It's easy to become confused by the direction faced by the other birds in the flock.

According to Lumosity, playing games such as Lost in Migration that improve "focus" teaches your brain to avoid distraction, function more productivity, and concentrate more intensely.

Other Ways to Improve Attention Span

The ability to concentrate on what is in front of you is a key to memory. You cannot remember what hasn't entered your consciousness. And this can only happen if you are able to pay attention to what you are listening to, looking at, or reading.

Debates on how to improve attention span have become more common as clinicians have come to recognize the severity and prevalence of attention-related conditions such as ADD and ADHD in both children and adults. Steps you can take to improve your own concentration include:

  • Practice mindfulness meditation

  • Play brain games that require concentration

  • Get sufficient restful sleep

  • Avoid sugary foods and drinks

  • Avoid excessive amounts of caffeine

  • Exercise aerobically several times a week

For more details and suggestions, see my Improve Your Concentration page.

If you have trouble concentrating and often find your mind wandering, don't despair. Make the suggestions above part of your routine, and you should start to notice an improvement in your attention span and ability to focus.
