The classic game of Checkers is great for improving concentration and keeping your mind sharp. And it's just plain fun!
Instructions. Click the game once to activate it. You can select the angle of view by clicking the "Perspective" button (which is the 3D version) or "Overhead". Select the Mode by clicking either "Be Red", "Be Black", or "2 Player". Then click the level of difficulty you want to play - Easy or Hard. When you're ready, click the START button.
Want to play on a bigger board? Click the "Play in Larger Window" link right below the game.
Additional Rules. Since the onscreen instructions are a little hard to read, here they are again for your benefit:
"Match you wits against the computer or against a friend. To move a piece, click on it with your mouse. You can only move the piece one space forward diagonally. You cannot move the piece backward.
The only time you can move a piece backward is when you achieve a 'King'. To king your pieces, you must reach the last row on the opposite side of the board.
Important Rule: If you can jump an opponent, you must do so.
If you are playing in the overhead view and would like to see all possible moves, just double-click the piece you would like to move. To take your opponent's pieces, jump over the opponent's piece diagonally and land on an empty square.
You can win the game by taking all your opponent's pieces or blocking your opponent from making any more legal moves.
Replay your opponent's last move by clicking the "Last Move" button."
Advanced Brain Training
Are you looking for a proven, scientific brain training program? If so, you might want to try Lumosity, the brain training service that I subscribe to.
I complete a quick, 10-minute Lumosity brain training session every morning. These training sessions exercise the different areas of my brain and prepare my mind for the day ahead. Over time, these sessions have sharpened my memory and other mental abilities in a significant and noticeable way.
A Lumosity brain training "session" consists of several mind-expanding brain games designed by the scientists at Lumosity and automatically selected for my individualized training program. Examples include Birdwatching, Monster Garden, Lost in Migration, and Spatial Speed Match, just to name a few.
Scientific studies show that Lumosity brain training measurably improves memory, attention, cognitive control, and processing speed. To help me track my own improvement, the "My History" section of Lumosity charts my brain's capabilities over time with easy-to-read graphs and Brain Performance Index (BPI) scores.
Lumosity is free to try. Complete one brain training session a day for two weeks, and I guarantee you'll be hooked!
