Backgammon
<< Back to Free Brain Games page

Backgammon is one of the oldest recorded games in history. Excavations at the "Burnt City" in Iran have shown that a similar game existed there around 3000 BC! Test your strategy skills, concentration, and luck against the computer in this famous board game.

HOW TO PLAY. The object of this game is to remove all your checkers from the board after you move them into your section of the board. On your turn, roll the dice and advance the white checkers into your lower right section of the board. To move, click the checker and then click the slot on the board to move to.

According to Wikipedia, the most direct strategy is simply to avoid being hit, trapped, or held in a stand-off. A "running game" describes a strategy of moving as quickly as possible around the board, and is most successful when a player is already ahead in the race.

When this fails, you can try a "holding game", maintaining control of a point on your opponent's side of the board, called an anchor. As the game progresses, you can gain an advantage by hitting an opponent's blot from the anchor, or by rolling large doubles that allow your checkers to escape into a running game.

A REAL Backgammon game. When I was younger, I used to play Backgammon with my parents and my brother quite often. Of course, back then we had the actual board game.

This board looks almost exactly like the one we used to have.
